Totally Concrete Saudi Arabia sits inside Big 5 Construct Saudi covering the material that Saudi Arabia consumes more of than any other, and the interesting thing about this year's hall was how much of it was about data.
Concrete is the industry's least digital product. It is specified by strength class, delivered by truck, placed by a crew and then judged weeks later by crushing a cylinder in a laboratory. Almost everything between the batching plant and the test result has historically been inference. That is what is changing.
Wireless in-pour sensing was the clearest example. Brickeye, the company formerly known as AOMS Technologies, sells sensors under its LumiCon product that report internal concrete temperature, temperature differential and maturity continuously from inside an element, which allows a contractor to strike formwork against measured strength development rather than a calendar assumption, and to detect thermal gradients in mass pours before they crack a structure. The company says the technology has been deployed on more than 3,000 projects in over 20 countries. On a Saudi site the value is doubled by climate: ambient temperatures that accelerate hydration and complicate curing make a maturity-based approach more accurate than a rule of thumb, not less.
The commercial consequence is a schedule one. Formwork cycle time is the metronome of vertical construction, and a contractor who can safely strike a day earlier on a repeating floor plate gains that day on every floor.
Admixtures and mix design occupied the other end of the same argument. High ambient temperatures shorten workability windows, and the chemistry that manages set time, water reduction and shrinkage is what allows a Gulf pour to be placed at all in summer. Lower-carbon binders were present too, and the wider industry context is not favourable to complacency: BrentDesk has reported on cement's carbon capture projects moving into construction while demand keeps outrunning the abatement. Saudi Arabia's cement consumption is rising with the project pipeline, which makes clinker substitution and supplementary cementitious materials a commercially live question rather than a reporting one.
Quality control was the theme the conference programme picked up. Sessions at the show addressed improving concrete quality directly, and the regulatory backdrop gives that weight: the 2024 edition of the Saudi Building Code became mandatory on 30 June 2025, and compliance is now enforced through permitting and occupancy rather than through argument at handover. A concrete non-conformance is no longer a commercial negotiation.
Production plant filled the industrial end of the hall and the adjoining outdoor apron. Block, paving and precast lines supplied by Topwerk's HESS Group business through Topwerk Middle East have been installed at Saudi producers including Arabian Tile Company and Saudi Pan Kingdom, and the direction of that equipment is towards fully automatic operation with in-line finishing. Precast and modular production is where concrete stops being a site material and becomes a manufactured component, with the design freeze, logistics sequencing and site-readiness demands that implies.
Saudi vertical integration was visible in the exhibitor base. Construction Products Holding Company, the Jeddah-based CPC group, runs precast and ready-mix operations alongside steel structures, glass and aluminium, cables and electromechanical subsidiaries across two industrial complexes, which is the model a Saudi developer increasingly prefers: one accountable supplier across several packages rather than a coordination problem across many.
What did not change is the constraint. Concrete quality in Saudi Arabia is limited less by the availability of good materials than by what happens in the two hours between a batching plant and a placed element, and by whether the crew placing it has been trained. Sensors measure that gap accurately. They do not close it.
